All classes from Prep to 6 have a weekly 45 minute PE session with a specialist teacher. The physical education teacher develops teaching and learning activities primarily from the dimensions of Movement and Physical Activity. The physical education curriculum also draws upon the domains of Interpersonal Development, Personal Learning, Thinking and Communication. The Health and Physical Education Learning Focus statements and Standards contain three broad themes (motor skill acquisition, participation in physical activity and sport education) which are addressed through the following core components of the physical education programs:
Prep – Level 1 • Basic Movements • Dance • Ball Handling • Aquatics • Minor Games • Perceptual Motor Program (PMP)
Grades 1/2 – Level 2 • Basic Movements • Minor Games • Ball Handling • Dance • Aquatics
Grades 3/4 – Level 3 • Minor Games/Major games • Athletics • Aquatics • Sport Education • Ball Handling • Dance
Grades 5/6 – Level 4 • Ball Handling • Outdoor Adventure • Minor Games/major games • Aquatics • Athletics • Sport Education • Dance
Note: Fitness Education and Fundamental Motor Skills are incorporated into all facets of the Physical and Sport Education program and therefore do not appear as separate components.
Sport/Sport Education – Grades 3,4,5,6. Each year students will participate in: • a variety of games and sports from invasion games, field games, net/wall games and target games • games that interest both boys and girls • a mixture of individual and team activities • games from a variety of cultures
Core Sports
• Football • Basketball • Cricket • Netball • Softball • Tee Ball • Soccer • Rugby • Racquetball • Lacrosse • Swimming • Bat Tennis • Athletics/Cross Country • Volleyball • Rounders
These sports are introduced in modified form in Grades 3 and 4 and extended over a further two year cycle in Grades 5 and 6. There is intra-school sport for all students in Grades 3,4,5 and 6 and interschool sport for Grades 5 and 6.
A house system operates within the school. Students in grade 3 -6 take part in annual athletic sports and cross country events. Each carnival has a house focus with every child, regardless of their ability, earning points towards their house. The carnivals are based around the VPSSA models. Students then have the chance to represent the school at District, Zone, Regional and State level.
Swimming, camping, snow skiing and surfing are organised at various levels throughout the school. Many other health related topics, including drug education, sex education, leadership, diet and healthy lifestyle are conducted within classroom programs.
