MUSICOur music program is school wide this year, with every child having a weekly half hour lesson. We sing and play percussion instruments, and enjoy using the xylophones and glockenspiels. Every second year we hold a whole school music concert, entertaining family and the local community with class performances. Our choir has performed at various events, from the Knox Festival to the Villa Maria Society. They are an energetic group of 40 students from grades 3-6 who rehearse weekly. Our music education incorporates a study of a variey of music genres, and visiting incursions bring hands on experiences of music from different cultures. It is enjoyed by all! DANCE Dance classes are offered at Carrington Primary School as an extra curricular activity for grades 4-6. The students take part in these classes twice a week for 1 hour. The dance genres taught are Hip Hop, Funk, Jazz and Cheerleading. Dance education provides students with opportunities to experience, understand, and value the language and art of dance. As dance uses movement in a unique way, it provides an exciting impetus for learning in other curricular areas. An education in dance provides students with opportunities to: • develop critical-thinking skills through the creative process of dance • communicate information, ideas, understanding, and emotions • develop self-motivation and enhance self-esteem through participation • appreciate the role of dance in the community • acquire skills and attitudes for lifelong involvement in dance (careers, recreation) • strive for physical well-being by developing their bodies • develop qualities of co-operation and respect for others through a knowledge and understanding of dance in various cultures.
In addition to dance classes, Carrington also has an advanced dance class. This class is for students who have been identified as talented in this area. They regularly compete in interschool dance competitions and perform at a variety of festivals, fetes, nursing homes, sporting events and fundraising organisations.
